Play Grimwyrm

Grimwyrm is free to play while it is in development. It runs on Windows, and a small launcher installs it and keeps it up to date.

Download for Windows

GrimwyrmLauncher.exe, about 7 MB. Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.

Getting in

  1. Give it a folder of its own

Your browser may warn that the file is not commonly downloaded. Choose to keep it. Then make a folder, for example one called Grimwyrm in your Documents, and move GrimwyrmLauncher.exe into it. The launcher installs the game in a game folder beside itself.

  2. Run it past the Windows warning

The first time you run the launcher, Windows may say Windows protected your PC. Choose More info, then Run anyway. You only see this once.

Every file the launcher installs is checked against a release we have signed, and it installs nothing that fails the check.

  3. Let it fetch the game

The first time, it downloads the whole game, a few hundred megabytes. After that it fetches only what changed. Then it starts the game.

  4. Make an account

On the sign-in screen, choose No account? Create one. You need an email address, a username of 3 to 30 letters, digits or underscores, and a password of 8 to 72 characters (accented letters count as two). Your username is the name your opponents see.

  5. Play

A new account is offered four short lessons first, one idea at a time. They wait under Tutorial at the top of the lobby whenever you want them.

You start with six ready-made decks, one for each patron, and can build your own in the deck builder. Pick a deck from the row of shields, then:

    • Play the bot starts a match against the house bot at once. Its switch sets the bot: Practice is forgiving while you learn, and Challenge plans every turn to beat you. With the switch on Gauntlet, the button becomes Start a run: one deck against all six patrons in a row, at Challenge, where one loss ends the run. Then it reads Fight and the next patron's name.
    • Find match pairs you with the next player who is looking for one.
    • Play a friend with its switch on Invite gives you a code to send to someone. They set the switch to Join, press Play a friend and enter the code within 15 minutes, and your match starts.

New to it? How to play has the rules on one page.

Updates

Start Grimwyrm from the launcher: it brings the game up to date first. If an update comes out while you are in the menu, the game tells you and restarts itself into it. It never interrupts a match.

What you need

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
  • About 2 GB of free disk space: an update needs room for its new files while it installs.
  • An internet connection: the game is online only.
