Lessons, a gauntlet and a bot worth beating

This update is for anyone who plays alone.

Four lessons. New players are offered four short lessons against the bot, each narrated by a patron: coin and steel, the purse, taxes, tolls and theft, and sellswords and blood. They wait under Tutorial at the top of the lobby for anyone who wants them again.

A bot worth beating. The house bot now plays all six patrons, one at random each match, with their ready-made decks. Set its switch to Practice for the forgiving bot you know, or to Challenge for one that plays to win: before each move it tries its options and keeps the best, so it trades, aims its removal where it hurts and takes a win when it sees one. Playing the Usurer or the Hoarder, it holds coin the way that patron rewards. The bot sees only what a player in its seat would, never your hand or the order of either deck.

The gauntlet. Set the switch to Gauntlet and take one deck against all six patrons in a row, at Challenge. Win and the next patron sits down; lose and the run is over. The lobby keeps your record: your best run and how many runs you have won.

A new lobby. Your decks stand in a row of shields, with new portraits for all six patrons, and every way to start a match sits in one bar beneath them.

Random effects now roll fresh each time, too. A card such as Wand-Drunk Cultist used to make the same picks every time it faced the same number of enemies in a match. Each roll is now its own.

The playtest is open

Anyone can now play Grimwyrm. Download the launcher, make an account, and you have six ready-made decks, one for each patron, to start with.

Practise against the house bot, find a match against whoever else is looking, or challenge a friend: the game gives you a code to send them, and your match starts when they enter it. The home page shows how many people are in the game right now.

New to the rules? How to play puts them on one page. Found a bug, or a card that felt wrong? Write to contact@grimwyrm.com. Everything is still changing, and what you tell us changes it.

A home for Grimwyrm

grimwyrm.com is now the game's official site. The old browser version that used to live here is gone: Grimwyrm is played in its Windows client, which is coming to Steam.

Here you can read how a match plays and meet the 6 patrons. Still to come on this site: a gallery of all 143 cards, live numbers from the server, and a trailer.
