Grimwyrm

Grimwyrm a one-on-one card game

They're saving for a dragon. Raise the price.

You can't see their hand, but you can see their purse. Tax them, and next turn their cards cost more.

Their turn: 7 coin in their purse under a tax of 3, and the Wyrm Matriarch in their hand costing 10, the one card there they can't afford.
They hold 7. It costs 10.

Their 9/9 wants to attack? That'll be 2 coin.

Put a toll on it, and every attack it makes costs them coin, from the same purse they buy cards with. They pay, or it stays home.

Their 9/9 under a toll of 2, their purse empty after paying it, and your hero hit for 9.
After its wage they hold 2. One swing costs 2.

A 9/9 for 6 coin. It wants 3 a turn.

Sellswords hit far above their price, then take wages at the start of each of your turns. The one you can't pay walks off.

The start of your turn: two sellswords paid, your purse down to 2, and an empty space where the 9/9 you couldn't pay stood.
Income 5. Wages 6.

The sums

You can count what they can afford

Both purses, both incomes, every tax and every toll are on the table, and unspent coin carries over. You can't see their hand. You can do their sums.

Tax

Two cards keep their dragon in hand for a turn

Their purse as their turn ends2
Their income next turn+5
You play Writ of Levy, 1 coinTax 1
You play Royal Assessor, 4 coinTax 2
Their Wyrm Matriarch7 → 10
They hold 7. Short by3

So it waits a turn. If they pay a taxed price, the extra is burned, not paid to you.

Toll

Every swing costs them 2 coin

Their purse as their turn ends0
You play Bridgewarden, 3 coinToll 2
Their income next turn+5
Their 9/9 takes its wage−3
The 9/9 attacks−2
Left for their cards0

Or it stays home, and they keep 2 for cards. The toll is due on every attack, every turn.

Upkeep

Three sellswords want more than you earn

Your purse as your turn ends0
Your income next turn+5
Pay Mercenary Captain−2
Pay Hired Blade−1
War-Ogre for Hire wants3
Short by1

So the 9/9 walks off the board. Wages are paid as your turn starts, before you buy anything.

Steal Sit on your coin too long, and a thief takes it straight from your purse.

Ready-made decks

Start with 6 decks. Build with all 143 cards.

Each deck is led by a patron, your hero for the match, who brings one rule of their own to the table. Play a deck as it comes, or build your own. Each patron's rule is on How to play.

  • Free Company

    The Quartermaster's deck

Hire sellswords, and pay them less than they're worth.

  • Light Fingers

    The Fence's deck

Rob their purse, and get paid to hit their hero.

  • Blood Rites

    The Butcher's deck

Pay for some of its cards in health, not coin.

  • The King's Levy

    The Reeve's deck

Tax their turns and toll their minions.

  • The Ledger

    The Usurer's deck

Save coin, and earn interest on it.

  • Wyrm's Hoard

    The Hoarder's deck

Sit on coin, and its wyrms hit harder for it.

Ways to play

You don't need anyone else online

  • Lessons

The tutorial is 4 short matches against the bot, each told by a patron. The third puts you through theft, tax and toll; the fourth has you hire three sellswords and watch the one you can't pay walk off.

  • The house bot

Practice forgives your mistakes. Challenge plans every turn to beat you, and never sees your hand.

  • The gauntlet

One deck against all 6 patrons in a row, at Challenge. One loss ends the run, and the lobby keeps your best.

When you want a person across the table

Find match pairs you with the next player who is looking. Play a friend gives you a code to send; they have 15 minutes to enter it.

What you're downloading

  • Windows may warn you the first time you run the launcher. Choose More info, then Run anyway.

Before you sit down

Is it free?
Yes, while Grimwyrm is in its open playtest: the lessons, the bot, the gauntlet and matches against people.
Do I have to unlock cards?
No. During the playtest every card is in the deck builder from the start.
I've never played a card game like this.
If you know a digital card game with a hero and minions, you know half of it. The lessons teach the other half: the coin.
What do I need?
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, about 2 GB of free space, and an internet connection. You need to be online to play.
Is it on Steam?
Not yet. It's coming. Until then a small launcher installs the game and keeps it up to date.
Who makes it?
Grimwyrm is an independent game, made without a publisher. Write to contact@grimwyrm.com.

They're saving up. Rob them, tax them, or kill them first.
